The Dandy Warhols – The Dandy Warhols (album)
Like a lot of people I’m sure, The Dandy Warhols were pretty much off my radar until the appearance of ‘Bohemian Like You’ on those Vodafone adverts! Before it got played to death I really liked it and wanted to get the album it was on. It ended up being one of those albums though that never made it to the top of my list of things to buy and wasn’t bought for me for a birthday or christmas or anything and eventually fell off my list altogether. However, during the time it was on my wish list, I found this album for just £2.99 (as the sticker on it reliably informs me!). I hoped that their older stuff would be just as good, so I bought it. I listened to it once, found it rather dull, didn’t bother ripping it to MP3 and just put it away on the shelf. When I started listening to it today I thought maybe I’d been harsh and misjudged it as I quite enjoyed the first proper song on it (‘The Dandy Warhols’ TV Theme Song’). However I’m now on track 6 and am bored of it already – the songs are too similar and just kinda droney. And it’s almost an hour and a quarter long! Ugh.
‘Genius’ – Up to track 9 now and I’m still bored. Oh god the next song’s over 8 minutes long! Some bands can make that work, but why do I think The Dandy Warhols aren’t going to be one of those bands?
‘Dick’ – Yes that’s the name of the 8 minutes long song. The start of the intro was actually quite promising – it sounded more interesting than previous songs. It’s now into the actual song and although I quite like the whispery lyrics, I’m bored of the tune already – it’s just the same thing over and over. Half-way in and OMG there was actually a key change!! Ha ha. Oh wait, back to the same notes again now. Yeah, this isn’t exactly ‘The Asphalt World’!!
‘It’s A Fast-Driving Rave-Up With The Dandy Warhols Sixteen Minutes’ Finale’ – And guess how long this song is!!! At least there’s only 1 more track after this one though.
Hoorah, it’s finished! That really was a dull and dreary album I have to say. At least the next CD should combat those problems…
The Darkness – Christmas Time (Don’t Let The Bells End) (single)
The Darkness are one of those bands I kinda wanted to like more than I actually did. Generally I’m a fan of campness and sillyness and glam type rock, but there was something about The Darkness’ songs that just didn’t quite appeal to me enough. Maybe it’s Justin’s voice – I think he overdoes the falsetto. What was that cover song he released a year or 2 ago? Oh, ‘This Town Ain’t Big Enough For The Both Of Us’. That was bloody awful! But yeah, I had no desire to buy ‘Permission To Land’ and still don’t. However I did rather like this Christmas single. The b-side’s good too.
Cathy Davey – Something Ilk (album promo)
This promo’s the full album. And a damn good album it is too!! I love the production on it and that big drum sound. Plus Cathy’s got a great voice of course. Cerys fans generally, but particularly fans of Never Said Goodbye, should definitely check this album out! Not that it’s the same sound, it’s got a totally different feel to it, but there’s a similar appeal, if that makes sense! It’s a really interesting blend of indie type pop-rock and an Irish folkiness, with tribal drumming! Cathy’s voice and general style has been compared to a whole load of people, including Cerys Matthews, Kate Bush, PJ Harvey and Alison Goldfrapp. Personally I think she sounds like Cathy Davey! ;-P I do get the Cerys comparisons though.
‘Hammerhead’ – Love this song!! Along with ‘Save Button’ it’s my joint favourite on the album. It’s the drums that really make it I have to say. Also gotta love the sweet way in which she sings “It may be sweet to share a bed but when you’re fucking with my head, this stopping pit is now a no-go zone”.
‘Old Man Rain’ – almost like a nursery rhyme, but in a good way! With just percussion for backing. Blows the dull unoriginality of The Dandy Warhols’ album out of the water!! Ooh, you can listen to it on her MySpace 🙂 Although her MySpace says that ‘Piece Of The Pie’ was on ‘Something Ilk’ when it was actually a b-side to ‘Clean & Neat’. Great song too though! Really like the demos for the new album on there too. When’s the 2nd album going to be released Cathy?!?
‘Save Button’ – My other favourite Cathy song. On first listen it sounds like a bitter love song to someone who treats you badly. However, on closer listen to the lyrics, you realise it’s a song to a computer that you use to record music on, but which keeps crashing on you and losing your songs! “I’m changing over to a Mac if you don’t give my files back. And it better be intact or it’s the scrapheap for you”.
Cathy Davey – Something Ilk (album)
Am more than happy to listen to this album twice in succession 🙂
Cathy Davey – Clean And Neat (single)
The first Cathy CD I bought. It was released in 2004; the year when I bought a vast number of singles! I was browsing the new single releases on the HMV website and came across ‘Clean And Neat’. I’d never heard of Cathy, but something about the single caught my attention and I clicked to read a bit more info about it. In the mini single review thing, the comparison to Cerys was made. Sometimes this will put me off artists, as there’s only 1 Cerys of course, but it actually made me really curious to hear Cathy. I bought the single, loved it, then bought the album not long after 🙂
Cathy Davey – Cold Man’s Nightmare (single)
The Dears – Lost In The Plot (single)
Another single from 2004! 🙂
