A-Z: The Avalanches – Barenaked Ladies

The Avalanches – Since I Left You (album)
I haven’t heard most of these songs in years! You really need to listen to this album as an album, so I’ve only got a couple of the songs on my usual playlist – those being Frontier Psychiatrist (of course! That song’s just amazing) and Since I Left You. Am enjoying listening to it again though – it’s really varied. A lot of the songs I wouldn’t be that fussed about on their own, but as an album it works. It’s a little long for my liking though – I’m only up to track 10 (out of 18) as I’m typing this and am starting to get a little bored. Although, actually, this track’s re-sparking my interest a bit – and Frontier Psychiatrist’s coming up soon 😀
*reaches end of album*
Frontier Psychiatrist’s the best track by far. It’s a good album, but I think it works best in the background at a party or something rather than sitting down and listening to it.

Badly Drawn Boy – Year Of The Rat (single)
This is the only Badly Drawn Boy CD I own. I know, slap my wrists! I always enjoy BDB songs but just don’t tend to get excited enough about them to rush out and get the CDs. I’m not surprised to see I bought this CD in 2004 – that year should officially be dubbed The Year Chantal Went Crazy With The Single Buying. Seriously, it was rare there was a week when I didn’t buy at least 1 single – lots of weeks I bought 3 or 4! This probably explains my debt!! ;-P Tis a great single though – the b-sides are great too – especially Don’t Ask Me I’m Just The President – fab lyrics!

Ballboy – Past Lovers (single)
The only Ballboy CD I own! I need to change that really. It’s difficult because there are always soooo many CDs I want to get, plus new ones have a tendency of coming out too – not that that’s a bad thing of course! But yeah, I’ve just finished writing my Christmas lists and spread across the 3 of them there’s a total of 117 albums – and that was being selective!!!! I like to give my family plenty of choice with my Christmas lists 😉 Anyway, back to Ballboy…my fave track on this single’s definitely The Angels – I’m not sure what it is about it exactly, it’s a pretty simple and straightforward song, but the lyrics are great and I find it really catchy. When was this single released actually? I’m going to guess 2004, he he…*checks*…it was!!! Hee hee.

Barenaked Ladies – Gordon (album)
Aha, BNLs! Woo. This isn’t my only CD of theirs!! I am still missing a few of their albums though I must admit. Should change that, but y’know…hang on, what were tonight’s lottery numbers? *goes to look* Meh, I only had 1 number. Lame. No CD buying binge for me then! Anyway, ‘Gordon’…tis a brilliant album!! Definitely one of my faves of theirs. All the songs are ridiculously catchy 😀 It’s got a great, fun, child-like quality to it – ‘Grade 9’ being a good example!
‘Box Set’ – I love the lyrics to this song! “Disc Four – Never released before. And you can tell why; it’s just some demos I recorded in my basement. Disc Five – I was barely alive, I was hacking up a lung, so they had to use a special computer as my replacement”.
‘New Kid [On The Block]’ – “I’m a New Kid on the Block, ‘though I may not be Johann Sebastian Bach, there’s no need to be afraid of us, ‘though it just might be your daughter on our bus”. Hee hee hee.
‘If I Had $1000000’ – this song just has to be mentioned. It must be one of their most well known songs, surely – along with One Week of course. Tis just brilliant. It’s all in the lyrics! Well, the tune’s catchy too!
‘Crazy’ – Aw, it’s the last song. This album’s practically an hour long, but it flies by. Ooh it’s quarter past 11! Am not tired at all yet though, so shall put on the next album!

Barenaked Ladies – Stunt (album)
This is the first Barenaked Ladies album I got, which is probably partly why it’s my favourite. It took me a little while to get into the first half of the album (excluding One Week and Alcohol), but the 2nd half I loved instantly. And now I love every single song.
‘One Week’ – such a brilliant opening track! And yeah it’s the song that introduced me to the BNLs – the X-Files lyric helping of course! 😉
‘Alcohol’ – ah man I love this song. It’s the BNLs song I’m most likely to put on a compilation CD!! So great to dance to and hell I’m always gonna love a good song about alcohol! “I love you more than I did the week before I discovered alcohol. And would you please ignore that you found me on the floor trying on your camisole”.
‘In The Car’ – another fave on the album. Have listened to it quite a bit recently actually. And I still can’t sing some of the lyrics without blushing! He he.
‘When You Dream’ – Beautiful, beautiful song.
