A-Z: Smokehand – Sophia

Smokehand – The Last Train (album promo)
I found out about Smokehand when I randomly got chatting to one of the band members (Andy) on LJ. He hasn’t posted in ages now and I’ve no idea what Smokehand are up to these days, but I really like this album. It’s difficult to describe the style of it but their MySpace goes for ‘dark loungecore’, which sums it up pretty well really.
‘Dancing With Strangers’ – “On the border of Canton and Riverside” – I probably shouldn’t be so easily pleased by local references, yet I am!

Mark Snow – The X-Files Theme (single)
I’m sure it won’t surprise anyone that I own this!

Jill Sobule – Jill Sobule (album)
I discovered Jill Sobule when I downloaded the song ‘I Kissed A Girl’, kinda by accident – it was tagged as being by Juliana Hatfield, but when I listened to it I could tell that it wasn’t. A quick google search showed me it was by Jill. I then downloaded a few more Jill tracks (on purpose this time), then a few more, then a few more… Discovering that her website provides free songs on a rota basis was brilliant too, as her albums aren’t that easy to get in the UK. I’m still missing some infact. I’m really looking forward to her new album though, as I helped fund it (albeit in a minor way!). The promos of that should be getting sent out round about now, so hopefully my copy will arrive soon. I was kinda hoping it would come in time to blog about it in this A-Z, but no such luck. Anyway, although this album’s got a few songs on it that I’m not so fussed about and don’t listen to that often, it’s also got a few of my favourites on it…
‘Good Person Inside’ – Although Jill’s songs often have catchy tunes, the thing that really makes them is the lyrics. I’ll no doubt be posting some of my fave lines, though I could almost post the entire lyrics for most of her songs.
‘I Kissed A Girl’ – Far far superior to the Katy Perry song of the same name!!
‘Resistance Song’ – Love this. It reminds me of The X-Files episode ‘The Field Where I Died’!
‘Supermodel’ – The only Jill Sobule song I was already familiar with, though I hadn’t known who it was by. It features in the film ‘Clueless’ which is why I recognised it.
‘Vrbana Bridge’ – Another fave. Although a lot of Jill’s songs have a humorous edge, this one’s much more traditionally moving and emotional.

Jill Sobule – Pink Pearl (album)
Jumping from 1995 to 2000 here (although the version I’ve got’s the 2004 re-release). This is an ace album – practically every song’s one of my favourites!
‘One Of These Days’ – “One of these days I’m gonna touch the sky like that awful song ‘I Believe I Can Fly’, I believe I can fly”
‘Mexican Wrestler’ – I think the title possible put me off this song for a little while! I didn’t really listen to it properly, but then when I did I realised how great it is. It’s one of my favourites now. “I can crack all your ribs but I can’t break your heart”.
‘Mary Kay’ – Gotta love a song about a teacher getting arrested for having an affair with a student!
‘Somewhere In New Mexico’ – Another favourite.
‘Guy Who Doesn’t Get It’ – Wow, having this one straight after ‘Somewhere In New Mexico’ is possibly too much emotional sadness all together! Love this song too. “Say I’m in the tub with a razor blade. You’d walk in and ask “How was your day?”. Then you’d lather up and start to shave, as I bleed on the new tile floor”.
‘Loveless Motel’ – There are so many great songs on this album. “I wouldn’t tell them that you had a wife that wasn’t me and we just had sex. And they wouldn’t be impressed if I told them you knew Lou Reed”.

Jill Sobule – Underdog Victorious (album)
Pretty much goes without saying, but this is another ace album! This one was released in 2004 and I bought it pretty much straight away.
‘Underdog Victorious’ – Great song! All hail geeky superheroes! Plus only an American could manage to rhyme ‘queer’ with ‘mirror’! *lol*
‘Under The Disco Ball’ – One of the first songs I downloaded for free from Jill’s website, though it was an earlier version. It’s only a minute and a half long but the lyrics are totally ace! I can’t just pick one line out though, you have to appreciate the whole song!
Ooh I just thought I’d check out the current free downloads on Jill’s website and they’ve got some of my faves up at the mo. Clickety click! I highly recommend checking them out. They’re free so what have you got to lose?
‘Angel/Asshole’ – OMG love this song! About the breakup of a relationship, but unusually from the point-of-view of the person who actually did the dumping. About how it’s not easy to be on that side of things either as you feel really bad but also feel kinda guilty for feeling bad as you’re the one who’s perceived as the ‘asshole’ rather than the ‘angel’! I kinda wish I’d had this song a couple of years earlier than it was released as it would have been quite fitting at a particular time, but hey. “I’ve been dumped, kicked to the curb, oh yes it hurts but it always passes. Then you’ll grow and then you’ll know that you’re better off alone”.

Jill Sobule – I Kissed A Girl (single promo)
Aw my last Jill CD – they’ve gone by far too quickly.

Sophia – Oh My Love (single promo)
Just the one song on here, sadly. I should really check out more by them!
