A-Z: Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci – Adam Green

Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci – Spanish Dance Troupe (album)
The first Gorky’s album I got. I’d read good things about it and about them generally, but I didn’t really want to go straight to buying an album if I wasn’t sure I’d like it. I kept looking out for singles but could only find the one for Spanish Dance Troupe, which looked great, but was slightly more expensive than I really wanted to pay at that point. I had the same thing with Ooberman, who I’d also just found out about and had been reading good things about – I could only find expensive copies of Blossoms Falling and Million Suns. Then one fortuitous day, I was in Virgin in Leeds and discovered an Ooberman single that had just been released!! It was Tears From A Willow. I then checked the Gorky’s section and found the Spanish Dance Troupe single still there. I’m not sure whether it had gone down in price or whether I just decided to get it anyway, but I bought them both at that same time. Happily I really loved them both and then wanted to get both of the albums they came from. This must have been October/November time in 1999, when I’d just started uni and my musical tastes were starting to nicely develop into what they’ve become now. Ooh, yep, Amazon tells me Tears From A Willow was released on 10th October and Spanish Dance Troupe had been in September. Anyway, I put both albums on my Christmas list that year and got them both – Ooberman – The Magic Treehouse from my Mum and Nick and Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci – Spanish Dance Troupe from my Dad and Glenda. I’ll get to Ooberman at another time of course, but Spanish Dance Troupe for now – I remember listening to it for that first time in my bedroom in Norwich. I didn’t find it a very instant album I have to say, with a few exceptions though – like Poodle Rockin’ which is just brilliantly mad. It grew on me though and eventually became a favourite album 🙂
‘Hair Like Monkey Teeth Like Dog’ – Hee. There aren’t enough mad songs like this on the later albums!
‘Murder Ballad’ – Love this song. I wasn’t that fussed about it for a long time, but when I actually read the lyrics I realised how great it is! “His true love with his dear brother. Wrapped in his sheets holding one another… From that moment he saw red. Thoughts of murder plagued his head. Took the dagger from his side. Drove through the hearts of them that lied”.

Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci – The Blue Trees (mini album)
‘Fresher Than The Sweetness In Water’ – My favourite song on here. I remember the first time I heard it – it was on a late night radio session on either radio 1 or radio 2 when we were in the car, travelling back from somewhere. After just that one listen the song got stuck in my head and I couldn’t wait for The Blue Trees to be released so that I could get to hear it again. Is it a cover song? I just noticed it was written by a ‘Ray Cane’. *googles* Oh yeah, he was in a band called ‘Honeybus’. Never realised that before.
‘Sbia Ar Y Seren’ – This is such a beautiful song, yet my overriding memory of it now is from when Euros played it live in Birmingham last year and the incredibly annoying guy next to me insisted on singing along very loudly and out of tune. Although it was funny at the end when Euros sarcastically said “ah it’s like being back in Wales – with the male voice choirs”. Ha ha.

Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci – How I Long To Feel That Summer In My Heart (album)
I haven’t listened to this album in a long time. I haven’t even listened to a lot of these songs in ages actually – I might have to check they’re actually on my MP3 playlist!
I’d forgotten how good this album is actually – it’s another one that took a while to grow on me. I think the only Gorky’s albums I’ve ever taken to instantly are Gorky 5 and Barafundle. And probably Bwyd Time.

Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci – 20 (singles & EPs ’94-’96)
Pretty self explanatory! Not an album I know, yet I still keep it here on my shelves. Brilliant collection of songs!!

Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci – Sleep/Holiday (album)
Aw the last Gorky’s album. Another one that took a while to grow on me! Again it’s got some great songs on it though (like you’d expect anything less!).
‘Eyes of Green, Green, Green’ – this song always makes me think of the TV show ‘Teachers’ now. I lost track of how many times they played it during the last series! 🙂 They had some good music on that show generally – The Bluetones would often pop up, plus I remember them using Easyworld – 2nd Amendment during the last series.

Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci – Pentref Wrth Y Mor / The Game Of Eyes (single)
My collection of Gorky’s singles is slightly random. The last few are ones I bought when they were released, but the earlier ones are just random ones I’ve found for reasonable prices at record fairs etc.

Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci – Young Girls & Happy Endings (promo single)

Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci – Patio Song (promo single)
I just realised this should have been before ‘Young Girls & Happy Endings’ on my shelf. Pants. I’ll swap them round now.

Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci – Diamond Dew (single)
This should have been before ‘Young Girls…’ too! Duh.

Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci – Sweet Johnny (promo single)
The radio edit makes me laugh – “and knock those rotters down” – ha ha, ‘rotters’.

Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci – Sweet Johnny (single)

Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci – Spanish Dance Troupe (single)
Ah, my first Gorky’s CD! Brilliant song.
‘(Do The) Chicken In The Jungle’ – Love this. It definitely helped with wanting to get the album.
‘The Johnny Cash Lawsuit Song’ – I wasn’t really sure what to make of this song when I first heard it! Love it now though.

Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci – Poodle Rockin’ (single)

Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci – Stood On Gold (acetate promo single)

Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci – Stood On Gold (single)
Stood On Gold’s such a beautiful song. The b-sides are both great too – especially ‘My Honey’. I vividly remember buying this CD in Virgin in Cardiff the week it was released. I was there shopping with my Mum and my sister I think. It was still in the days when I hadn’t actually been to Cardiff many times – well, as in shopping in the city centre and stuff anyway – I’d been to Whitchurch lots to visit Uncle Emlyn and Olive, plus there was a chinese restaurant we went to quite a few times in Cardiff somewhere, when staying with Auntie Margaret and Uncle Bernard – is there a bit of a Chinatown area somewhere, or did I imagine that? This must have been about 15 years ago or something, my memory’s a little vague. I mostly remember my sister and I singing ‘we are siamese’ from Lady & The Tramp while shuffling our feet down the road in the rain, both wearing the same coat (hence the siamese thing – there was logic in there somewhere)! And then getting lost in the car on our way back to Quakers Yard and having to ask for directions. From doing some googling I think the restaurant might have been in Riverside. Infact I think it might have been the Riverside Cantonese Retaurant – it looks kinda familiar – especially being on a corner. Will have to ask my Auntie Margaret when I next see her. Er, I’ve gone a bit off topic here right? Like that’s unusual!!

Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci – Mow The Lawn (single)
*does a little dance to the end of ‘Old Fanny Mahoney’*

Grandaddy – Now It’s On (single) CD2
I’ve decided that ‘enhanced CDs’ are a pain in the ass! As nice as it is to have the videos, why do they have to autorun?! This one didn’t even load up properly and has now made my start bar disappear. Annoying. I’ll have to restart my computer to get it back, but I don’t really want to right now. I’ll have to Alt-Tab between my windows instead. Grah.
Anyway, now that the music’s actually playing – this is yet another band I should really get more CDs by!

Adam Green – Jessica (single)
Ah, Adam Green! And Jessica!!! Ok, this definitely requires some reminiscing. Naturally Adam Green songs remind me of Cerys’ Cockahoop tour in 2003, when Adam Green was the support. Specifically 2 memories are evoked from that tour. One memory is from the first gig in Cardiff at St David’s Hall – that was my first introduction to Adam Green. I wasn’t aware of him at all before that – whether solo or from when he was in The Moldy Peaches. Anyway, picture the scene – you’re sitting in St David’s Hall, this fairly large and fairly fancy theatre type venue, when this guy comes on stage with an acoustic guitar and starts singing songs about hairy nipples and Jessica Simpson and other such amusing things. I didn’t know what to make of him at all! My overriding memory from that gig is of me and Chris meeting up with Donna and Emma during the interval (as we weren’t all sitting together) and just peeing ourselves with laughter.

My second memory is of the third and last gig I went to on that tour – at Union Chapel in London. Actually there are a few things I think of when I think of that gig and Adam Green!! The first I mentioned yesterday – the people booing during Adam Green’s set. I think there were a few songs that people took offence to, but the one I specifically remember was ‘No Legs’ – that was the first time I’d heard him sing it, so it sticks in my mind. I really rather like that song now. Infact I rather like Adam Green generally – especially ‘Jessica’, that’s a great song. It evokes my 2nd memory from the Union Chapel gig, which is of Adam Green and Cerys duetting on it. Even though they’d first done that the previous night in Milton Keynes, the memory of the London gig’s more vivid for some reason.

And my final memory from that gig is of the aftershow party. I got guestlisted for the London gig from having won the Il Est Midi competition on Cerys’ website and then from meeting and talking to her at the Milton Keynes gig the previous night. That was all very nice of course but after the actual gig I really just wanted to get home – I was feeling pretty tired and had a bit of a headache and had promised my sister we wouldn’t be late back to Hemel as she was picking us up from the train station. ‘Us’ being me and my friend Dave who I’d gone to the gig with (well, we were friends at the time anyway – despite the fact he managed to piss me off at all 3 of those gigs!). Dave, however, was always keen to schmooze and there was not a chance in hell he wasn’t taking the opportunity to go backstage! So he kinda dragged me along. I’m not sure how long we stayed, probably just half an hour or 45 minutes, but he kept promising me we’d just be ‘another 5 minutes’ and then disappearing off and leaving me on my own while he tried to act all cool and schmooze with people. So yeah I spent most of my time looking lost and alone and pissed-off! Cerys appeared briefly and said hi but she didn’t stay long as was all pregnant and tired and stuff. Sadly I didn’t have such a good excuse! Not that I’d have wanted to be pregnant, but y’know. The low point of that whole experience was probably watching Dave try to have a conversation with Bucky Baxter. Seriously I just wanted to disappear, it was so uncomfortable. I did manage a slight smile in this photo, but you can see the fear in Bucky’s eyes!! Ha ha. Despite that, there were actually a couple of high points that made the whole thing worthwhile. One of which was having a photo taken with Adam Green. Is he actually permanently stoned, or does he just seem it?!! He insisted on the pose in this photo. As you can probably tell I found it all quite amusing.

The other high point of the night was getting to talk to Teel. During one of the many times that Dave buggered off and left me looking all lonely, Teel kindly came up to me and started talking. From what I remember he liked my top (which had the American flag on it – you can kinda see it in those photos) and thought I had a strange name! Ha ha. I vaguely remember doing the whole ‘yeah my name’s French, but I’m not French’ thing. That was pretty much the extent of our conversation, though probably partly because Dave reappeared then, no doubt jealous that I was managing to talk to band members without even trying! Ha ha. I doubt Teel even remembers that (I meant to ask him last year actually), but it totally made my night. Aside from Bucky, he was the only band member in that line-up whose name I’d actually remember – probably for slightly shallow reasons, but still I’m pleased he’s the one person who’s stayed the same. It wouldn’t seem right seeing Cerys and there not being a Teel there. Roll on November, it’s been too long!

Adam Green – Emily (single)
Woah, how did it get to half past 5?!! I’m supposed to be tidying up today as the letting agent’s visiting on Tuesday. Bugger. I suppose I should probably stop sitting in front of my computer and typing and swapping CDs around! ;-P Yeah, ok, I’ll make this my last CD for now.
